The more anticipated 2020 Jeep Gladiator is finally set to enter the mid-size pickup truck segment and give some companies run for their money. Ever since the grand success of the vastly successful and storied trucks like the XJ-Cherokee based Camacho, Jeep fans have been waiting for one more pickup truck from this much successful company.
Building upon the recent success of the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep is all set to enter the pickup truck market which has once again become hot and is on the verge of expansion with the new range of Ford Ranger just on the horizon to be launched. Just like most Jeep vehicles, Wrangler included, this one is also going to be distinguished by its off-road abilities and its brand allure.
Now let’s come to the point and look at what we found about this monster of a pickup truck while attending the 2018 LA Auto Show.
First, to perhaps the most important specification in any car, the powerhouse or the engine, let us look at how powerful and innovative does the engine fair up in the market.
The Gladiator comes in two engine choices, either the 3.6L V6 or a 3.0L Turbo Diesel engine, surprisingly enough, though the pickup is based roughly on the Wrangler platform, the Wrangler’s four-cylinder turbo engine won’t be offered. The standard engine of the Gladiator is a gasoline-fueled V6 which has the capacity to produce a power of 285 Horsepower and a torque of 260 pound-feet. The Diesel engine which is to be revealed in 2020 only is 260 hp with 442 pound-feet of torque. This added power is expected to make the off-roading performance of the truck better as well as help with the towing capacity. By the way, the towing capacity is rated at 7650 pounds. The cabin looks as far from luxury as one can get, but still, it looks one which is ready for adventure and off-roading. Base models of the truck are fitted with a 5-inch infotainment system with the Uconnect infotainment system bringing the screen to 7 or 8.4 inches. The Gladiator features new rear seats which can flatten out to accommodate hefty luggage and create more space if the cargo is more.
This one looks just like a Jeep Wrangler with cargo bay extended out of it. The character line which carries from the bed gives this truck an integrated feel, however oddly enough the second row in the truck has retained the same feels of the wrangler with the angled rear edge just like on the Wrangler. With the trucks rear axle moved back, unlike other pickups this one doesn’t have a squared off second door row.
The truck is available in soft top, black hard top and a body-coloured hardtop and it depends on the trim of the truck which one is it that you get. The tailgate is damped, so it lowers slowly plus it can also be halted in three positions. The 5-foot bed has tie-down anchors and under-rail lighting. It can be outfitted with an optional spray-in bed liner, a bed divider, a 115-volt power outlet, and a cargo cover. There is room for storing up to a 35-inch tire beneath the bed, which addresses the needs of the owners who significantly modify their truck according to their own needs and styles.
Jeep lets you have several of its advanced safety and driver assist systems such as the forward collision warning, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, cruise control and a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines.
Coming on to the main part, the Jeep Gladiator 2020 is expected to roll out with a base price of $31,455. Although the pricing hasn’t been announced according to our estimates, it shouldn’t cross the $32,000-$35,000 marks.
The Gladiator takes forward the virtues and the character of the much loved Jeep Wrangler which has created a robust vehicle that is good and off-roading and is very customizable according to the needs of the owner. Apart from all the good, we expect the same problems as the Wrangler to continue in this car as well. What is survey suggests is like the Wrangler buyers who know what they are getting and still choose it, this car is also enjoying the same experience in the market with the fans going for it no matter what.
